Ever notice the buildings in Winnipeg’s Exchange District? Ever wonder why it’s called The Exchange District for that matter?

Way back in 1881, the central area of downtown Winnipeg was a thriving trades business area. Winnipeg had 3 major newspapers that were all located on the same block of Albert Street known then as “Newspaper Row”.

The Exchange District was filled with warehouses and railroads. Trains would travel through the area to pick up their orders and drop off their deliveries. This caused Winnipeg to florish and would become to be known as the “Gateway to the West”. People on the westcoast were unable to recieve their Shipped orders from the old countries without them being transferred from the eastcoast and through by train.

Aspiring arcitects from Chicago and New York needed practice testing out their designs. Buildings were designed and built in the Exchange that carry great detail and craftmanship. In 1997, The Exchange District became a National Historic Site. It is known as one of the most historically intact turn-of-the-century commercial districts on the continent.

The first World War took it’s toll on the booming industry of Winnipeg. Orders and shipments were stopped and the railroad was used for more than deliveries. Businesses suffered. Afterward, the Great Depression happened which only made things worse. A lot of the businesses and industries were forced to shut down.

Winnipeg’s industry started to look good again after the depression lifted, orders began once again travelling through the prairies once again. Until a new passage way was opened for ships to sail through. The Panama Canal was opened. Ships could freely make their journey around the lower side of the continent now and sail on through to the westcoast. The trades had shifted.

Although I am jotting down things I read from here and there, I am not too certain of the actual dates these events took place, but if it wasn’t for these events in the first place, Winnipeg might still be a thriving metropolios.

Thanks alot history.

Well, another birthday has come and gone. (Jan.10th)
It was a good day. In fact, this is one of the best birthdays I had in a while.

Usually, I keep my birthday a secret and wonder why hardly anyone wishes me a happy one. I guess I never liked the fact that I was getting older. I have now officially passed 30, and I feel okay.

I tried to hint to people that my birthday was coming up since late last year and I recieved many a “Happy Birthday” this time around.
I didn’t do too much for my birthday: I woke up a little early and opened the presents from my girlfriend, had waffles for breakfast, had a filling lunch, had a good afternoon class, picked up an animated DVD collection for myself, had a great supper and watched Justice League Unlimited this evening. Very well-written stories! I kept my birthday plans simple and that’s what I wanted.
I also picked up a copy of Clerks II for myself last night and watched that. Great movie!

I am content with my life right now. Things could be better, could be worse, but I have decided to try to make the best out of it as I can.

My advice to you dear reader, is to not take life for granted. Do what makes you happy. Make memories while you can. If you are unhappy with your current state, try to change. Change is good.

Acme out.

It’s a little late, but better late then never.
People who bicker and whine while waiting in a check-out line should stop and think for a second.

It’s a little late, but better late then never.

People who bicker and whine while waiting in a check-out line should stop and think for a second.

“Why don’t they open more registers?” – Don’t you think that they would if they could? Obviously, if more staff is present, more would be open. Stop making yourself sound stupid.

“I have someplace to be right away…” – If you have to be someplace at a certain time, why didn’t you plan your time more wisely? Or for that matter, why would you be shopping if you have to be somewhere else at the same time? Plan better next time jerk.

“I don’t celebrate Christmas, why do I have to wait in line?” – Why is your cart full of Christmas decorations? No words.

My advice for you people who constantly complain when shopping in a busy retail store, learn patience. Learn respect for others. Just learn.
